Unpacking UAINE - Sustainability

UAINE, our Gaelic name, means ‘green and verdant’, reflecting the lush green pastures which surround our Flagship Candle Cellar Door in Morpeth, as well as our philosophy of sustainability and environmental consciousness. So many of our beautiful natural fragrances at UAINE are based on the native environment and flora around us, and we believe this environment is worth protecting. We’ve decided to put some time aside to focus on just how we are keeping the environment healthy (along with our loyal and much-loved customers) through our products, and how you can do the same!

Our Ingredients

Our goal is to provide our customers with high quality products, made from the purest ingredients on offer. Our 100% Pure Soy Wax is clean and cool burning, containing no additives, toxins, or carcinogens. This means our candles are safer for you, and safer for the environment. Our 100% Pure Soy Wax is also sustainable and warm water soluble, minimising environmental impact.

Our reed diffusers use a vegetable oil base (instead of petro-chemical-based oils more commonly found in other reed diffusers) providing you with some of the safest, cleanest, and healthiest home fragrance products on the market.

Our natural fragrance oils are derived from absolutes…similar potency to essential oils, absolutes are as clean and pure as essential oils but stabilised to reduce risk of flammability or combustion (a potentially dangerous outcome of using essential oils in candles). Our natural fragrances are stored in recycled sealed jugs that we re-use in our candle pouring rooms.

Packaging

All of our packaging is 100% recyclable. Our cardboard inserts and boxes can be put in your compost bin at home (just make sure to take off the easy peel labels first). We use cardboard-based packaging, which is sturdy and protective of our products, but can easily be recycled or composted.

Reed Diffusers

Being vegetable oil based, our reed diffusers have a much longer life expectancy than most other reed diffusers commonly available in Australia. Our customers tell us they regularly experience two, two and a half or even three years from our reed diffusers – even longer than the standard times we publish on our packaging!. This provides you with outstanding value for money and helps the environment.

Our reed diffuser jars are easily recyclable. Simply take off the easy peel label on the front and base, and it is ready to recycle! The pure rattan reed sticks, which we use instead of the cheaper plastic or so-called 'fibre' ones, are organic and 100% biodegradable.

We are passionate about giving our customers sustainable products, not only for their enjoyment and the money they will save, but also for the preservation of the environment and prevention of waste.

Candles

UAINE 100% Pure Soy Wax candles are cooler burning. It means that they are both safer and longer lasting. Most other candles on the market contain paraffin wax or soy wax blended with paraffin wax or palm oil. You can often spot candles that use these potentially harmful waxes – the packaging doesn’t specify what wax is used, or they use terms like ‘soy blend’ (but blended with what?) or ‘hybrid soy wax’.

If you are given a candle and you aren’t sure of the authenticity of the wax you can quickly test what sort of wax is in the jars – harmful waxes typically produce a black soot rim around the jar, the wick smokes ‘like an old bloke’ and the jar will get very hot to the touch after a couple of hours or so. Since the testing authorities around the world identify paraffin as toxic and carcinogenic when burnt (even ‘food grade’ wax) we suggest that you take the opportunity to throw it away. If a friend has given you a potentially harmful candle, try educating them (perhaps show them this article?)…or get new friends! :)

UAINE candles should be warm to the touch after extended burning. This dramatically reduces the risk of jars cracking or exploding (yes, it does happen…and more frequently than you might think) and resulting fires. And as many of you will know we nearly lost our house to a (very expensive) paraffin wax candle that exploded in our bathroom!

Our candles’ natural fragrances are also beautifully consistent throughout the life of the candle. Our glassware is high quality and perfect for repurposing! We use easy peel labels on all of our products so our customers can re-use our beautiful jars without having to advertise us, further encouraging recycling and repurposing. Simply peel off our easy peel labels on the jar’s front and bottom and wash any remaining wax out of the jar with hot soapy water. Our 100% Pure Soy Wax is warm water soluble, so your jar should be squeaky clean in just a few minutes! Once your jar is clean, feel free to re-purpose it however you would like! We suggest using them for kitchen, office, bedroom organisation or as plant pots, but the possibilities are endless.

Refills – Yes or No?

We are extremely supportive and fully embrace the idea of re-purpose, re-use and recycle. However, we don’t recommend re-filling containers that have been pre-used (this includes re-purposed jars, cups, bottles, etc.). This is because we cannot guarantee that there has been no damage to the container. Micro cracks can be exploited by heat (even the low heat levels from UAINE candles) as that can create a safety issue. Interestingly, the insurance industry recently presented a paper to the candle industry warning of this (and, of course, that is even more important to those manufacturers who use paraffin or a soy/paraffin mix) and of the consequences in the event of catastrophic failure. The paper also advised against a prevalence to add other items into a candle such as rocks, gemstones or rings which can radically change the intended burning properties.

UAINE is at the forefront of safety and health, so instead of re-filling candle jars, we do encourage you to re-purpose or recycle our jars, as mentioned above.

Questions?

We are committed to ensuring our customers are always satisfied with our products. If you ever have any questions or are looking for advice about recycling, disposing of or re-purposing any of our products or packaging, please do not hesitate to reach out. Every member of our team at UAINE Candles has a favourite way to re-purpose our products, and they would love to share them with you! You can also post pictures on this blog site of innovative ways that you've re-purposed UAINE containers.

We look forward to seeing you online and at our Candle Cellar Door.

Best regards

Andrew
